The Spirit of Liberty Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation, was formed to raise funds and to assist in the restoration and maintenance of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. After the restoration was completed, the Foundation’s mission was changed to enhance the meaning and importance of liberty.

In 2005 the Foundation’s name was changed to the Spirit of Liberty Foundation to reflect its broader mission – enhancing the meaning of liberty and to support our Armed Forces, with an emphasis on Wounded Warriors, their Families and Families of Fallen Heroes.

Its headquarters are in San Diego and is governed by an independent board of directors and trustees. Many of the trustees are among the original Official Sponsors of the 1986 Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Centennial effort. The Trustees are successful Americans from all walks of life who believe liberty is the World’s most important asset.
